Description

Memory has become distorted. It can no longer distinguish between the face of a martyr and the face waiting for its turn. All faces have become one face, imprinted and burdened with the dust of collapsed houses, drenched with the salt of tears that never dried.

Each of our faces once had its own features—a smile that resembled summer, a look like a window.

Now one face has become a mirror for another. Even names have begun to resemble each other, as if war has emptied us of details and left in our memories only the remnants of blurred, gray images. We no longer know whether they represent a life that has passed or a death awaiting us.

We do not forget because we have remembered more than we can bear. Yet our memory has betrayed us, fading and hiding in a dark corner.

All faces have become one face. The survivors resemble the dead, and hunger no longer distinguishes between a living body and a body buried beneath rubble. The dead continue to stare at us from among the ruins.
